Last Day of 1st Semester

Sharlene is having class party today before the school closes for 2 weeks. It will be a fun day for all the kids today. No lessons in school, no need to bring school bag, no need to wear school uniform, plenty of food to eat, lots of snacks to bring home and most of all, get to go home early.

Hubby said she woke up this morning feeling very excited about going to school. She quickly got herself ready with the help of Aunty YK and together with her friend, Choi Sin, both of them walked to school eagerly. This friend of Sharlene stays nearby our house. Every morning her mum walks her to school and on the way to school, both of them walk pass our house. Sometimes Sharlene will join her friend and both of them will walk to school together. Likewise, the 2 girls will walk home together after school.

Today she will surely come home with loads of junkies. I’ve told her last night that she’s not supposed to eat so much of it and she has to share it with everyone. Hope she remembers that and keeps them until I get home later.

On another note, Sharlene has got back her mid-term test results in a folder 3 days ago. I think she did pretty well and I was pleased with her results. Her best was 100% for Mathematics and as expected, her Chinese was the lowest at 83%. On the folder I noticed the teacher wrote 15/26. I reckoned #15 is the position she obtained in her class of 26 students. At that moment, I admit that I was slightly intimidated by the number I saw on the folder. Really bad huh, me? But overall, I am proud of my little girl whom I know has done her best.

Sharlene Has Fully Recovered From Chicken Pox And Is Going Back To School Today

Thank you everyone for your get-well wishes. After being confined at home for 9 long days, Sharlene’s finally going back to school this morning. Her mild chicken pox has all dried up, however there are some tiny scars on her body and one prominent mark next to her lips. Hopefully, all of them will go off in time to come.

She will be having test for the whole of this week, starting from today with B.M subject. I did revision (based on the lists of test contents given by her school) with her over the weekend. She was quite co-operative and didn’t fuss or complain much whenever I teach her. This year the school is going to set some really tough questions for their 5-year old preschoolers. I don’t think at such a young age they will know how to ‘re-construct a mix-up sentence’. For example, from ‘sedang Saya menulis.’ to 'Saya sedang menulis.'??? I had a tough time trying to teach her this and she didn’t seem to get it right...Arghhh :( After a few attempts, I finally gave up cos I didn’t want her to get stress up with something that are beyond her comprehension. Furthermore, I was stressed too...haha. Anyway, I just hope she will try her best to complete the test.

She should reach home by now. I am going to call home shortly to ask her about her day in school and also whether she can answer her B.M test paper :D Have a great week ahead, everyone!

Last Day Of School

In a blink of an eye, Sharlene has completed her first year of pre-school. Today is the last day of school before the school closes for 7 long weeks. No lessons for today as they are having class party and parents are allowed to bring their kids home an hour earlier. Last night, I took out a dress for her to wear this morning and also prepared a small bag for her to bring to school. I put in her usual cutlery set and told her nanny to fill up a bottle of water for her before I left for office this morning.

It is a norm for every kid in the class to bring along an item, such as food, drinks or snacks for the class party. For this, parents have to crack their brains and think of something to buy for their little ones. Although this can be a simple task for some parents, I still have to ponder for days before I could decide. I'm quite bad in this. After thinking for a few days, I’ve finally decided to bake something. I did it last night after I got home from work. It was pretty quick and easy as I have all the ingredients at home and some 'assistance' from my girl. I shall post about it very soon...so stay tuned, ok. :)

What about you? Do you cook/bake or just buy food items for your kids' class party? Hopefully, I can get some ideas from experienced mommies out there :) Then, I do not have to crack my brain so hard the next time.

Annual Sports Day - 6 September 2008

Two Saturdays ago, Hubby and I attended Sharlene’s first sports day at one of the secondary schools field in Sri Damansara. A few weeks before the event, we received a notice from the kindy informing us that all participants have to reach the school field by 7.30am. We were so excited and eager to attend the sports day, as Sharlene will be taking part in one of the events.

On that morning I woke Sharlene up much earlier than her normal school days, got her ready in her sports wear and off we went to the school. I thought she would kick up a big fuss for waking up so early but to my surprise, she didn’t and was very cooperative with me :) Reached there on time and brought her to see Teacher Apple (her class teacher). In the course of waiting for the event to start, Sharlene stayed with the teachers and other children while hubby and I wandered around the school field with our camera.


Sharlene in her sports wear looking a bit worried and uneasy, as she couldn’t find daddy and mummy:( Instead of sitting down with her friends, she was looking everywhere for us.


We waited for about half an hour before Sharlene’s event (‘picking up eggs’). Here she's waiting for her turn to 'pick up eggs' and put it into a basket. She did quite well but unfortunately the photos showing her in action were rather blur :( my camera skill is lousy ler....definitely needs improvement.


Although her team didn't win the event, she did her best and was nevertheless very happy with a medal and a bag of goodies received at the end of the event. She even wore her medal in the car and refused to part with her bag of goodies. Guess what's inside the bag? I thought it was some unhealthy stuff but I was wrong... the contents are 2 sample packets of Enfagrow A+ formulated milk powder, 2 sample packets of dugro 1 plus milk powder, a can of green tea which Sharlene willingly gave it to her cousin brother, an egg tart and a hotdog bun. After opening the bag Sharlene was a tad disappointed over the contents and didn't even take a second look at it. But I was so glad that the school didn't give out any junkies to the kids.

Homework On A Daily Basis

Lately, I noticed Sharlene has been bringing back homework everyday. Her homework consists of colouring and letter writing. Some days she brought home 2 books, 1 colouring book and another exercise book for letter writing. What about your kids? Do they have homework EVERYDAY? At times my girl is so lazy and refuses to complete her homework. Her nanny has tough time asking her to do it sometimes.

I've a bedtime routine with Sharlene every night. Before she drinks her milk, I will check her school bag to see what she had learn in the morning, look at her completed homework and read to her. As I was checking through her bag I found a colouring book which she put into another smaller compartment. I opened the book and found a page with a 'Homework' chop on it. I was shocked to see a clean flower picture...meaning she didn't do her homework. Her nanny didn't notice the book when she checked it during the day. It was almost 9.00p.m. and I thought she must be too tired to do it.

When I told her she has another page of colouring to do, I was surprised she took her colour pencils right away and finished off the colouring in less than 10 mins.


Sharlene did her colouring on a stool in my bedroom with Aunty YK holding the book for her. Look, she's so occupied with her colouring here.


Almost done here. Quite a nice piece, right. If only she can show this kind of enthusiasm everyday. I'll be so happy. On another note, maybe I shouldn't expect too much from a 4 yr old kid.

Sharlene's Homework

Sharlene has no homework for the 1st half of this year (1st School Term). However, when the 2nd school term started in June this year, she has been bringing back homework almost every other day. Here’s how her completed homework looks like. She coloured the picture and did the letter tracing at the foot of the page.


Aunty YK (Sharlene’s nanny) will check her school bag everyday and look for books with ‘Homework’ chop stamped on top of the page. If she has homework on that day, Aunty YK will get her to do it after her lunch and shower. So far, she completes her homework (mostly colouring) before I reach home in the evening. According to Aunty YK, Sharlene does her homework depending on her mood on that day. If she is happy and not lazy she will colour the picture neatly and beautifully. Otherwise, she will simply scribble and use only 1 type of colour to colour the entire picture.:( Or she will procrastinate by giving all sorts of excuses to her nanny. Anyway, I’m glad that she completes her homework and so far, she hasn’t left any work undone. “Good Job Sharlene!”

Award For Excellent Performance

This was what Sharlene received at the prize giving ceremony yesterday morning. A trophy for getting number 3 in the class. Last night, she was so busy showing off and telling everybody that she's got a trophy in school. And of course, she received lots of praises, hugs and kisses from everyone at home.


That's how happy, excited and proud she was for the whole of last night.

Collection Of Report Card

Today hubby went to Sharlene's kindy to collect her report card. They reached the kindy early just like normal school days. After a short discussion with Sharlene's class teacher, hubby brought Sharlene home together with a folder containing her report card, test papers and completed worksheets. Even though she is just 3.5yrs old and doesn't quite like going to school, she did pretty well for her mid-year test and obtained good marks for all her subjects. After perusing all her test papers, I found that the questions set by the teachers were rather difficult and high standard for the young kids. I am sure the teachers have to explain the questions and guide the kids to complete the test. Otherwise, they will have difficulty in answering the questions.

Besides Sharlene's test results, Hubby was told by her class teacher that she got number 3 in her class. Wow! so young also they record the position in the class. Anyway, Hubby and I were very happy and proud of her achievement in her mid-year assessment and hope she will do well in future assessment too.

Sharlene Is Going To Kindy Today

Finally, Sharlene has no sign of fever and the tiny red spots on her face and body have also subsided and she's off to kindy this morning. She has been sick too frequently nowadays since she started schooling early this year. This time her condition was the worse with high fever and rashes that lasted for 7 days. Hopefully, her immunity will be stronger after all this infection. I hope that she will get use to school life again after being absent for 3 consecutive days. My girl doesn't quite like to go to school and its really difficult to wake her up every morning despite putting her to bed as early as 9pm every night. I called Hubby just now to find out how she's doing this morning. He gave me the same answer again - she was so lazy to wake up and don't want to go to school. She has been attending kindy for more than 5 months now but sad to say that she still couldn't get used to the routine of waking up early and getting ready to go to school. I have been telling her and really don't know for how long more I need to tell her that everyone needs to go to school to learn and mingle with friends. I wonder if other parents are facing this problem of getting their kids to school??

Due to lack of sleep for the past few nights busy taking care and checking Sharlene's body temperature every few hours in the night, today I'm feeling under the weather, having mild headache, body ache and fever. After taking breakfast this morning, I took 2 panadols and hope it won't be my turn now to fall sick. I should really sleep early tonight and let Hubby handles Sharlene.

Mid-Year Assessment

Every night before Sharlene goes to bed, I will check her school bag to look at what she has learned in the day. I will also check her pencil case to make sure her stationery are all intact, no missing items. Sometimes she forgets to bring home 1 item, another day she will bring home 1 extra item. I think most kids have this tendency of lossing their belongings every now and then. Both my nephew and niece have lost numerous items during their kindi days as well. As a preventive measure, I have stocked up dozens of pencils and erasers.

Besides school books every student will have a message book. If there are notices for the parents, the class teacher will stick the notice onto the message book, which is an exercise book. Parents are required to sign at the space provided after they have seen it. As I was browsing through Sharlene's books just now, I saw a notice pasted on Sharlene's message book. Its an A4 sized paper and when I looked at it once again, I saw the heading 'Mid-Year Assessment Contents'. Its a timetable for the kindergarten mid-year test, starting from 5 May until 8 May. What's more, the notice contains list of topics/questions for each subjects.

To me, the topics/questions given for each subjects are a bit too tough for a 4-year old. Looks like I have to start coaching Sharlene tomorrow for the forthcoming test.

Sharlene started pre-school

Sharlene started pre-school this year. She goes to a kindergarten nearby our house. I still remember how she reacted on her first day of school. Hubby and I brought her there. She refused to get down from the car and after we persuaded her, she relunctantly went inside the school. Then she started to cry and cling on to us like a koala bear. I told hubby that we just have to leave her with the teachers because our presence there will only make her wail even more. Finally, we left her with the teachers and went to pick her later. When the teacher opened the classroom door, she saw us standing outside the gate. She was smiling and running to us happily.


She is slowly adapting to the school life now. She is a very shy and timid girl since young and seldom mix with other kids. However, her class teacher said that she is totally different in the classroom. She is willing to participate and very helpful too. I think she just needs more time to get use to the school life.
