Ouch! My Bum Bum Is So Pain:(

Sharlene has been complaining about this the whole day. She has slight diarrhoea and each time she complaint of tummy ache, she passed out watery stools numerous times today. So frequent that her bum becomes sore and painful. She also accidentally poo pooed in her pant. She yelled and cried everytime she needs to poo poo today.:(

Sharlene had developed high fever of 39.5 degrees Celsius on Wednesday afternoon, after she came back from school. She was so unwell that she lied down on the sofa the whole afternoon and refused to eat anything. Luckily, she didn’t reject water which was given to her from time to time. Her fever came down after a Voltaren suppository was inserted. She took her nap shortly after that and was again in her bubbly self when I came home after work. I started to have a second thought of bringing her to the paediatrician, thinking she’s all right.

After I came out from my shower, I saw her lying on her bed and I knew instantly she wasn’t feeling well again. Her temperature shot up again. Hubby and I rushed her to the paed clinic immediately. After a thorough check the paed said she has 2 ulcers in her throat. Poor girl, her throat must be so painful at that time. We went home with a bottle of antibiotics (Augmentin), and a bottle of fever and pain relief syrup (Nurofen) for her.

Her fever subsided quite fast. However, she’s still taking her antibiotics today and I think it could be the antibiotics that caused the diarrhoea and her painful bum…haha! Hopefully, the diarrhoea will stop once the antibiotics is discontinued, which will be on Monday. She should be able to go back to school on Monday as well after being absent for 2 days.

Tonight I’m going to apply some petroleum jelly onto her painful areas and hopefully it could relieve the soreness.

The Pink Sisterhood

I've been tagged by Mummy Gwen, Ling and Slavemom and this tag is all about breast cancer awareness.

Here's some facts about breast cancer:

* One in eight women or 12.6% of all women will get breast cancer in her lifetime.

* Breast cancer risk increases with age and every woman is at risk.

* Every 13 minutes a woman dies of breast cancer.

* Seventy-seven percent of women with breast cancer are over 50.

* Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women between the ages of 15 and 54, and the second cause of cancer death in women 55 to 74.

* Risks for breast cancer include a family history, atypical hyperplasia, early menstruation (before age 12), late menopause (after age 55), current use or use in the last ten years of oral contraceptives, and daily consumption of alcohol.

* Early detection of breast cancer, through monthly breast self-exam and particularly yearly mammography after age 40, offers the best chance for survival.

An Eventful Weekend

We have visitors over at our house during the weekend. They were my parents and sister. Oh, I was so delighted to have them here especially my parents who seldom visit KL due to work commitment. Well, actually their main purpose of coming here is to attend my sister’s convocation. They arrived just in time for dinner on Friday evening. Aunty YK cooked some simple dishes for us on that day and my mum even bought my favorite roasted duck from JB. Oooo, the duck was simply delicious!! I should have taken pictures of the duck and the home-cooked dishes that we had on that night but I'd completely forgotten about it as I was too busy eating and chit chatting with my parents and sis...haha!

Hmm...yummy, the mien (noodles) is so delicious!

After breakfast the next morning we took them to Pavilion for shopping. My mum loves to shop and she can go without food for hours when she’s engross in shopping. On the other hand, my dad is one of those who dislike shopping. Back home, he prefers to sit in front of the TV or play golf than go shopping with my mum during weekends. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much time for my mum to shop in Pavilion, as we need to rush back and get ready for my sis’s convo in the evening. She only got herself 2 pair of shoes from Sembonia and a blouse from Parkson. Later in the evening, my parents and I attended my sis’s convo. Poor hubby stayed home to look after Sharlene as Aunty YK has gone on leave.

On Sunday we went to Mid Valley Megamall with my sil's family. Reached there about noon, we headed straight to Metrojaya and whilst shopping, my sil called to say that they are going home first cos' my niece wasn't feeling well. I used to love shopping but not anymore now cos whenever Sharlene is out in the shopping mall I've to keep an eye on her ALL the time.

We left Mid Valley around 6.30pm.

Sharlene refused to go to bed early for the past few nights. While I was chatting with my parents at home, I set some maths questions for Sharlene to do. She loves counting and is able to do some simple addition (with pictures) exercise now.

Sharlene was busy doing her maths exercise that I've given her earlier and that kept her occupied for quite a while....In the meantime, mummy had a great time chatting ...haha! :)

The Way Sharlene Eats Her Apple

Here's how Sharlene eats her apple at home. Very simple and no cutting required for me. All I have to do is to give her the whole apple after removing the skin. It saves me so much trouble to cut the fruits into small pieces or small wedges. I remember that was how she used to take her apples when she was younger. This fussy pot only likes crunchy honey apples from South Africa and she can gobble down the whole apple within minutes. I myself also prefer South Africa honey apples, as they are sweeter, juicier and crunchier. I will have supply of honey apples in my fridge all the time. It's better and healthier to munch on fruits than other unwholesome snacks when the kid is hungry.

That day I was sitting next to her and was trying so hard to snap some pictures of her munching the apple. It was quite tough as she gave me all kind of funny faces when I told her to look at the camera and smile. Haha...finally I got these 2 pics that looks all right to me. She really looks cheeky and playful here.

Today Is Sharlene’s 4th Birthday

HAPPY 4TH BIRTHDAY TO YOU, MY DEAREST SHARLENE

Time really flies and you are 4 years old today, Sharlene. On this day 4 years ago, daddy and mummy were very anxious whilst waiting for your arrival in the delivery room. You were delivered via induced labor at 1.30pm and that was the happiest moment in daddy and mummy’s life. Our precious ‘miracle’ baby was here at last! Mummy was terribly exhausted after using all my might to push you out from mummy’s womb. However, all the exhaustion and pain that mummy endured subsequent to the induction were soon vanished after the nurse brought you over to me and put you on my arms. Finally, I was able to cuddle and kiss my own baby, which I yearn for after 5 years of marriage. Tears filled my eyes the moment I saw you and no words could describe my feeling at that juncture.

Sharlene, daddy and mummy LOVE you from the bottom of our hearts. Now till forever! Daddy and mummy also wish you good health and happiness always.

It’s Never Too Early To Instil Healthy Eating In Children

Don’t you agree with me?

Last week I was told that my niece who is 7 yrs old has high cholesterol. It was diagnosed with a simple blood test. Nowadays, not only adults have high levels of cholesterol, children also may have it.

In my niece case, she is not overweight or obese. Her cause of high cholesterol might be due to her eating habits. Since young she loves to eat chicken skin, chicken feet, fried chicken wings, fried ‘yau char kwai’ and other oily and crunchy stuff. All these food are very yummy but they are certainly not good for health if taken regularly.

I’m rather fussy when it comes to food selection especially Sharlene’s daily food. Good nutrition and a balanced diet are very important for a growing child. I always follow these basic guidelines when it comes to preparing or choosing food for Sharlene –

· Limit salt and sugar intake. Sharlene has been trained from young to take bland food. For example, she takes hard boiled eggs without adding soya sauce. Recently, I start to put in a little bit of soya sauce on her soft-boiled eggs so that it taste better. She’s still taking barley drink without sugar.

· Limit fat intake by keeping away from deep-fried foods. We do take fried stuff once in a while. As it is quite impossible to avoid deep-fried foods totally, what I do is – take some tissues to dab away excess oil on the food (at least it helps to remove some oil).

· Limit fast food and junk food. Children love all these, aren’t they? I don’t completely ban her from eating all these. Instead, I let her indulge in it once in a while. How can she resist when she sees her cousins taking french fries and chips :(

· More fruits and vegetables. Luckily, she’s not choosy and likes to take fruits. But she can be quite picky when it comes to vegetables.

I hope I can encourage Sharlene to have a healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime.

Just The Two Of Us

I was in a jovial mood the whole of yesterday. I didn’t drive to work in the morning as hubby and I’d planned to go Mid Valley Megamall after work. My sil gave me a lift to the office instead. Hubby reached my office at around 5.30pm (exactly my knock off time) to pick me up and we arrived at Mid Valley before 6pm although it was raining cats and dogs at that time.

Our main purpose of going to Mid Valley is to get Sharlene a gift for her forthcoming 4th birthday. At first, we went to Jusco, looked around at the children department for about an hour. As we couldn't decide on what to buy there, we headed straight to Little Penang Kafe for dinner. After dinner we decided to go to Toy r Us to continue with our mission. We finally got something for Sharlene in Toy r Us. Before we went home, we dropped over at Carrefour and Bread Story to get Sharlene's favorite butter roll. The bakery was about to close for the day when I reached there and all the balance items were on 30% off. I quickly grabbed some buns and cheese tarts and went back to Toy r Us to collect the toys we purchased. We had earlier requested the staff to wrap the toys for us.

Yesterday’s 4 hrs of non-stop shopping was also a good way for us to spend time together...just the 2 of us!. I really miss our 'pak tor' (courting) days. Well, hubby and I hardly have a chance to go out together now. Most of the time, our outings will include my sil's family as they are just staying next door. How nice if only we could do this more often.

Do You Check Your Kids’ School Bag?

Ever since Sharlene started pre-school early this year, checking her school bag every night has become my daily routine. At this moment, it is my responsibility to ensure that her books are properly and neatly placed inside the bag, her homework for the day is completed, her stationeries are intact, her color pencils are well sharpened, and most importantly, no foreign objects are put inside her bag.

At one time, Sharlene has a habit of putting her favorite items inside her school bag. I guess she's reluctant to part with her toys when she goes to school. And therefore she wants to bring them along too. These are the few items that she's fond of putting in – small little soft toys and other knick-knacks, coins, stickers, etc. However, she can never get to bring all those stuff to school, as I will remove it from her bag without her knowledge (soon after she has gone to bed). Fortunately these days her tendency of bringing her favorite things has ceased. This has definitely saves me the trouble of searching her bag again.

Another habit that I found out is that she brings home pencils and erasers that doesn’t belong to her. As I was checking her pencil case the other day, I discovered 2 pencils which were not familiar to me. Hence, it prompted me to ask her -

Me: Sharlene, where is your pencil? Can you tell me whose pencils are these?
Sharlene: My friend.
Me: Why did you take your friend's pencils? You cannot simply take and bring home your friend's pencils.
Sharlene: All my friends take my things and I have no more things.

That was the reason she gave for bringing home her friend's pencils. The attitude of - you take my things and I take yours... Obviously, her own pencil had ended up in her friend's pencil case. Anyhow, I expressly told her to return the pencils to her friend. The next day I was glad that she brought back only her own pencil. She also told me that she'd returned the pencils to her friend.

Hopefully, Sharlene will learn to treasure her belongings in future. By the way, have you encountered this problem before with your school going children?

The Weekend After We Returned From JB

We made a wise decision to leave my parents’ place and come back here last Friday. Therefore, we were not caught in the massive traffic jam encountered by most people who return during the weekend after the Hari Raya break. On top of that, we had 2 full days of rest before going back to work on Monday.

Hubby was at home last Saturday and he will be for the rest of the Saturdays. Effective 1st October, he only needs to work 5 days a week but of course with changes in his working hours. We have been hoping for this day to come and at last, his company declared this good news last month. Hubby is really happy about this adjustment and so am I :) Finally, he has more time for himself now and also gets to spend more time with us. At the same time, I can have some breathing space when he’s around to take care of Sharlene...hee hee.

Last Saturday, hubby and I brought Sharlene to the salon for a haircut. Actually, her hair wasn’t that long (as you can see from her previous photos here) except for her fringe that touches beyond her eyebrows. I just can’t tolerate her hair covering part of her face especially when she bends forward to write and read. This girl doesn’t like to have her hair tied up as well. She perspires a lot too and most of the time her hair is soak with stinking sweat especially during hot weather. Although I’d love to keep her hair long but due to all these reasons I’d have to put off this wish until she’s a bit older.

Here's Sharlene after her new haircut. Very boyish looking hor...does she looks like a boy now? Everyone in the house commented that she looks more mischievous and cheeky with this hairstyle.

On the same day we’d booked a badminton court and shortly after lunch hubby drove us there with sil and family. We only spent about 1 hour there but that’s enough for a good workout.

Sharlene in action - swinging her racquet in all directions and yay! after a few unsuccessful attempts, she finally managed to hit the shuttlecock back to me.

She's trying very hard to move her racquet to the direction of the shuttlecock with both her hands.

My nephew who is a school badminton player. He can play quite well but certainly needs more stamina to run around the court.

And my sweet looking niece flashing her smile here.

Finally She Gets To Touch The Cat

Besides having 3 dogs, our JB house has a cat too and her name is Fiffy. Fiffy is extremely afraid of Sharlene and this silly cat will disappear to nowhere when Sharlene is around in the house. Poor cat, she doesn't even want to come home for her food. Fiffy will only come home after Sharlene has gone to bed. I really don’t understand why the cat is so fearful of my little girl.

On the other hand, Sharlene isn't afraid of the cat at all. She's absolutely crazy over Fiffy and she will get excited when she sees the cat and can’t wait to catch hold of the cat so that she could cuddle her like a baby. But I don’t really like her to lay her hands on the cat or any other furry animals. If possible I don't want her to be close with pets that have been shown to cause allergies. As she was coughing during that time, I was worried that her exposure to the dogs and cat would aggravate her condition.

Despite me telling her repeatedly not to touch or go near the cat, she had refused to listen and one morning, I caught her secretly went into my Aunty's room to look for the cat. Seeing how Sharlene loves to touch the cat, my Aunty grabbed hold of Fiffy and brought it near Sharlene. Of course, she was thrilled to bits!

Sharlene who was still in her pyjamas, stroking Fiffy incessantly until I came into the room, and the poor cat dare not even move slightly. I think she's petrified that Sharlene would eat her up. lol!

Luckily I caught her fast enough, or else she would have cuddle the cat in her arms or even kiss her *pengsan*. She told me I want to see her only but her hands kept touching and patting the furry cat. After that I washed her hands thoroughly with soap.

Shopping Spree in J.B

We went shopping in JB last week and visited quite a few shopping malls there. My sis tagged along with us and all we did were shop and dine. While hubby and my sis took turns to watch over Sharlene, I quickly grabbed some outfits from Metrojaya for Sharlene as I have not been buying her new clothes for quite some time. I managed to get myself 2 T-shirts and a pair of slip-on high heels too. Whereas, hubby got himself some very nice working shirts and 2 pairs of cuff links.

On our way home after shopping one evening, we dropped by Tesco to buy a box of doughnuts. The Big Apple Donuts & Coffee has opened its first outlet in JB. Oh, I love and simply couldn’t resist Big Apple Donuts doughnuts because of the light, fluffy and not so oily texture. My sis and I went to the doughnuts counter and pick our favourites.

Here's the variety of doughnuts we chose -

Back home, we almost finished up the 1 dozen of doughnuts leaving only the durian flavor and some cut up pieces of other flavors for my dad, as we couldn’t wait for him to be back from work to gobble down the delightful doughnuts.

Sharlene loves the doughnuts too especially the one with chocolate topping. She couldn't keep her fingers off the topping and kept licking her fingers which were full of melted chocolates. Looking at the way she eats, I was so afraid that she would drop her doughnuts and stain her white blouse. I kept reminding her to be careful and thank god, she didn’t dirty her blouse at all.

We're Back Home

We reached home today after spending 7 wonderful days in my hometown. We enjoyed happy time with everyone there - it was truly a great holiday for us!

We had a smooth journey just now as there were not many cars on the road and the weather wasn't too hot as well. As usual, Sharlene fell asleep soon after her milk session and only woke up about 2 hours later...and hehe, I managed to take a short nap too. Since she has taken a nap in the car, I'm sure she will only sleep after midnight. So, instead of bringing her to the bedroom, I just let her spend time on her own while I'm busy writing this post. She's very energetic now, walking up and down the stairs, talking to me, playing with her toys, looking at her books and disturbing everyone whom she has not seen for a week. Most likely, I'll have a tough time putting her to bed tonight. I really wish to write more but got to go now....can't concentrate writing as she is here disturbing me again :(
